Georgia’s Flat Income Tax Rate Drops to 5.19%

Starting July 1, 2025, Georgia’s flat income tax rate decreased from 5.39% to 5.19%. This reduction is part of the tax reform under HB 1437, signed by Governor Brian Kemp.
This change means many taxpayers will see an increase in take-home pay, especially retirees whose tax benefits are directly impacted by the state rate.

Georgia Legislators Explore Eliminating State Income Tax

Georgia legislators met in a special committee to study how to eliminate the state income tax. Supporters argue that this would make Georgia more competitive with neighboring states such as Florida and Tennessee, which do not levy an income tax.
However, critics caution that replacing the lost revenue would likely require higher sales or other taxes, which could disproportionately impact lower-income households.

IRS Warns of Fraudulent Tax Schemes Circulating on Social Media

The IRS recently issued an alert about an increase in fraudulent tax schemes spreading on social media.
These scams promote false claims involving credits like the “Fuel Tax Credit” and the “Sick and Family Leave Credit,” either offering nonexistent benefits or charging taxpayers for improper filing assistance. The IRS advises verifying information through official sources and being wary of offers that sound too good to be true.
